Celebrating the life of
Denise Svetlik Portman
January 29, 1923 - November 29, 2022
On November 29, 2022, we lost our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Denise Svetlik Portman. She was only two months away from her 100th birthday.
Denise was born on January 29, 1923 to Rudolf Svetlik and Clare Armstrong Svetlik in Istanbul, Turkey where her father was the Ambassador from the newly formed country of Czechoslovakia. So began her love of travel and learning other languages - ultimately six in all. She grew up in Prague, having first lived in Australia where she learned English. At the end of WWII, she met Captain Harry Portman, MD at a dance for Army officers. He was enchanted with this beautiful blonde who spoke perfect English.
Denise was predeceased by her husband Harry Portman MD and her son-in-law, John Powell. She is survived by her daughters Renee Dunn, Michele Powell and Nina Malone {Stephen), her grandsons Charles (Mary) and Alexander {Sara) and four great grandchildren, Charlotte, Connor, Katelyn and Andrew. She is also survived by her special niece Denise Svetlik Montanus and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Hospice Savannah, Inc., P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416. Burial will be private.
Aunt Denise was the epitome of a Southern lady. So kind, friendly, generous and caring. May her memory be a blessing.

My late husband, Judge Charles Mikell, enjoyed Mrs. Portman immensely. He had spent a year in Czechoslovakia and was a real Czechophile. She had so much respect for her intellect and humor. I am grateful for their relationship.
